Topic: “InnerShift: Coaching at the Deeper Places of the Client’s Thinking” with guest speaker Rod Francis, PCC
We coaches invest significantly in honing our skills to support our clients to think bigger and more creatively so they can make the shifts and changes needed to achieve their goals, evolve their behavioral repertoires and self-concepts, and generally optimize their lives. We primarily do so by deploying core conversational skills such as great listening and powerful Socratic questioning, ones which primarily impact on what are called explicit cognitive processes. Yet cognitive scientists widely believe that these account for no more than 5% of our real cognitive power, and that the deeper implicit processes which accommodate all the rest are what shapes all the explicit, conscious thinking and behavioral processes. Clearly if we coaches want to help our clients think bigger and effect lasting systemic changes then finding ways to impact this 95% inner process would seem quite important. So do they exist? And if so, then what might those skills be? Well as it turns out, cognitive science does has some fantastic suggestions and this one hour presentation will offer some simple theory on this extraordinary challenge, but more importantly Rod will be integrating practical learning experiences for participants to understand how to work with these systems themselves and also how to incorporate some simple tools and methods into their client-facing work.
Key Learning Outcomes
